Our distinctive
Inner Healing Prayer
Inner healing prayer is a gentle, Christ-centered way of praying through painful memories and emotional wounds — inviting God to bring His comfort, truth, and presence into the places that ordinary insight alone cannot reach. At Koinonia Restoration House it is woven together with trauma-informed care, so the mind and the spirit heal together rather than separately.
What is inner healing prayer?
Inner healing prayer is the practice of prayerfully inviting God into the wounded places of our story — the memories, losses, and hurts that still shape how we feel, react, and relate today. Instead of carrying those moments alone, we ask the One who was there to bring His comfort, His perspective, and His truth.
It rests on a simple conviction: God cares about the whole person. Much of our pain isn't only in our thoughts — it lives in memory, in the body, and in the beliefs we formed in our most vulnerable moments. Inner healing prayer reaches toward those places gently, so that healing is not just understood but experienced.
At Koinonia Restoration House, inner healing prayer is never a stand-alone technique. It is woven together with faith-based emotional healing and trauma-informed care, so that insight and the presence of God work together. You can read more about how the two are integrated on our approach.
How does inner healing prayer work?
Every session is unhurried and led by your sense of safety. While no two journeys look the same, the prayer usually moves through a gentle rhythm:
- 1
Settle and consent
We begin slowly and prayerfully. You are always in control — we only go where you feel safe to go, at a pace your soul can hold.
- 2
Notice what surfaces
Often a present struggle — anxiety, shame, a recurring reaction — is connected to an earlier memory or wound. We gently pay attention to what comes up.
- 3
Invite God into the memory
Rather than reliving the pain alone, we prayerfully ask where God was and what He wants you to know there — listening for His comfort and truth.
- 4
Receive and replace the lie
Wounds often leave behind a false belief ("I am alone," "it was my fault"). We bring that lie into the light and receive the truth that frees.
- 5
Integrate the healing
We make sense of what shifted with compassionate, faith-based care — so the change takes root in daily life, relationships, and how you see yourself.
Clearing up the confusion
Inner healing prayer vs. deliverance vs. counseling
These three are often confused, yet they answer different needs. Here's how they differ — and why, at Koinonia Restoration House, inner healing prayer and compassionate, faith-based care are intentionally brought together.
| Inner healing prayer | Deliverance ministry | Counseling / therapy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus | Emotional & spiritual wounds — memories, grief, shame, lies believed | Freedom from demonic oppression or spiritual bondage | Understanding patterns, symptoms, and how the past shapes the present |
| Primary means | Prayer that invites God into the memory for comfort and truth | Prayer of authority in the name of Jesus | Conversation, skilled questions, evidence-based principles |
| Tone | Gentle, reflective, consensual | Confrontational toward the spiritual, not the person | Collaborative and exploratory |
| At Koinonia | Core practice, integrated with faith-based care | Not offered; referrals when appropriate | Not clinical care; we offer faith-based support & referrals |
Is inner healing prayer biblical?
The phrase "inner healing prayer" isn't found in Scripture, but the heart of it runs all through the Bible. From beginning to end, God is revealed as the One who draws near to the wounded, heals the brokenhearted, and renews the mind with truth.
We hold the practice humbly. It is not a formula that obligates God, and it never replaces His Word, the local church, or wise counsel. Rather, it is a prayerful way of cooperating with what God already loves to do — comfort His children and set them free. Anything that surfaces in prayer is weighed against Scripture, gently and without pressure.
-
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."
Psalm 147:3
-
"…to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives…"
Isaiah 61:1
-
"…be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Romans 12:2
-
"You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
John 8:32
What to expect
What an inner healing session looks like
Sessions are private, online, and calm. There is nothing to perform and nothing to get right. We talk first — about what's bringing you in and what you're hoping for — so prayer always rests on understanding and trust.
When you're ready, we turn toward prayer together. Dr. Dunn helps you notice what surfaces and gently invites God into it, listening for His comfort and truth. You remain fully in control the whole time; we slow down, pause, or stop whenever you need. Afterward, we make sense of what shifted with compassionate, faith-based care so the healing settles into everyday life.
Healing is rarely a single moment — it's a journey of being restored. Some sessions bring noticeable relief; others quietly lay groundwork. We honor your pace and never promise outcomes, because real transformation is God's work and yours, unfolding in trust.
Is this for me?
Who inner healing prayer is for
Inner healing prayer is for the believer who has prayed and served and still carries an ache that won't lift — the recurring anxiety, the old wound, the grief that sits heavy, the lie that "I'm too much" or "not enough." It's for those who don't want to leave their faith at the door of healing.
It's a gift for people walking through the lingering effects of trauma and attachment wounds, painful seasons, shame, or a stuck place that insight alone hasn't reached.

Common questions
Inner healing prayer, answered
What is inner healing prayer? +
Inner healing prayer is a form of Christ-centered prayer that brings God’s presence into painful memories and emotional wounds, asking Him for comfort, truth, and freedom. It is a ministry of prayer, not a clinical treatment, and at Koinonia Restoration House it is integrated with trauma-informed care rather than used in place of it.
How is inner healing prayer different from counseling or therapy? +
Counseling and therapy work mainly through conversation and insight. Inner healing prayer invites God directly into the wounded place for His comfort and truth. Dr. Dunn’s care is faith-based and pastoral — she weaves compassionate understanding together with prayer, rather than offering clinical counseling or therapy.
Is inner healing prayer biblical? +
Inner healing prayer is rooted in biblical themes — God as healer of the brokenhearted (Psalm 147:3), Jesus sent "to bind up the brokenhearted" (Isaiah 61:1), and the renewing of the mind (Romans 12:2). The specific practice is not a named ritual in Scripture; it is a prayerful application of these truths, held humbly and tested against God’s Word.
Is inner healing prayer the same as deliverance or exorcism? +
No. Inner healing prayer focuses on emotional and spiritual wounds — memories, grief, shame, and lies we have come to believe. It is gentle and reflective, not dramatic or sensational, and is distinct from deliverance ministry.
Can inner healing prayer help with trauma? +
Many people seek inner healing prayer for the lingering effects of trauma. At Koinonia Restoration House it is always paired with trauma-informed care and moves at a safe, consensual pace. It is pastoral support, not a substitute for licensed clinical treatment, and we gladly work alongside your medical or mental-health providers.
Do I need to have it all figured out before we start? +
Not at all. You don’t need the right words or a clear memory to begin. We start where you are, listen together, and let God lead the pace.
